A weekend, for this count, means one Saturday plus the Sunday that follows. That's the definition most calendars, workplaces, and travel plans use, so it's what I've stuck with on this page.

Some sources return odd numbers when they answer this question — one popular incumbent site says "58 weekends until Christmas 2026," which is roughly the count of all weekend days (Saturdays and Sundays counted separately). That's a different question. The answer to "how many weekends" is 21.

If your work week or cultural calendar treats a different pair of days as the weekend (Friday-Saturday, for example), you'll want to adjust. But the 21 figure below reflects the standard Saturday-Sunday definition.

Why This Number Matters for Planning

Weekends are where the heavy lifting of Christmas prep tends to happen. Shopping trips, decorating, wrapping, travel, and family gatherings mostly land on Saturdays and Sundays. Counting weekends instead of days gives you a much more realistic sense of "how much time do I really have."

Travel and family visits. If you're driving or flying to see family for Christmas, most of that travel happens on one of the last three weekends: December 5-6, 12-13, or 19-20. Book accordingly, and remember that airfares climb steeply after mid-November.

Weekend shopping trips. Twenty-one weekends is 21 chances to shop, but the last two weekends before Christmas (December 12-13 and 19-20) are the ones most people rely on. Cyber Monday 2026 falls on November 30, so the weekend before that (November 28-29) is when many online sales start.

Decorating and prep. Most families decorate on a weekend. Common choices are the weekend right after Thanksgiving (November 28-29) or the first weekend of December (December 5-6).
